You will learn about the cork trees and its production, visit a a local winery and perform a wine tasting epysode, you might also be able to discover some old town, who has, for a very long time tryed to preserve its part of the Portuguese culture even if time slowly passes by...

So, shall we begin our discovery?

We will pick you up at your hotel or apartment, Cross the bridge over Tagus River and leave the city of Lisbon in search and discovery the simplicity and splendor of Alentejo region...

ALENTEJO

The plains that extend as far as the eye can see start close to the Tagus. While to the north, the pace is set by the green of the flatlands, further south the landscape combines with the sun, the heat and a slower pace of life.
To the north, the pastures of the marshlands; in the vast interior, unending flatness, and fields of wheat waving in the wind; at the coast, wild, beautiful beaches waiting to be discovered.
The vastness of the landscape is dotted with cork oaks and olive trees that withstand time and the yards and gardens are witness to the Arab influences which shaped the people and nature.
This is the Alentejo... Discover for you this vonderful land!

OPTIONS

We have two options for you to start this tour:
1. THE CORC FACTORY
2. THE ALMENDRES CROMLECH

Option N1: CORK FACTORY

Portugal is the biggest producer of cork in the world.

Most of it comes from cork oaks and holm oaks in Alentejo. No wonder there are so many objects in Alentejo handicraft made of this material.
We invide you to visiting a cork factory where you will learn the importance of the product in the region, and for Portugal’s economy, learning the processing from harvest to final product. A convenient cork shop is available at the end of the visit with special price offers for our valued clients...

Option N2:THE ALMENDRES CROMLECH

As an option we can visit the Almendres cromlech.

There are many megalithic monuments on the outskirts of Evora and throughout central Alentejo. This prehistoric riches in Alentejo is one of the most important in the Iberian Peninsula and even in Europe. So, it makes sense to talk about a Megalithic Circuit in Evora and consider this city as the capital of Iberian megalithic.

The Almendres Megalithic settlement (or cromlech) is the biggest megalithic monument in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the oldest in the world. Everybody has heard about the grand Stonehenge, in Britain… The Almendres monument is 2000 years older! It was built about 7000 years ago, when mankind in Western Europe was making the transition from hunter-gatherers to herders and farmers.

THE CAPITAL OF THE REGION OF ALENTEJO

We invite you to visit the Capital of the region of Alentejo.
The whole city is surrounded by a defensive stone wall and since 1986 classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, due to its excellent preservation along the centuries.

We can even tell you that little difference exist between this medieval city today or some centuries ago...

ÉVORA

This town has been developing itself without losing its medieval characteristics and that's why it deserved this "prize" from UNESCO.
We will have enough time to walk in its historical centre  to "inspire and feel" the atmosphere of this old town.

THE GIRALDO SQUARE

The tour will continue up the narrow streets of the old town reaching the Giraldo square where the Inquisition once had its headquarters.

THE ROMAN TEMPLE

You will also have time to  explore the Roman Temple (also called the Temple of Diana), thet was built in the early 1st century and is located in the historic city center, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, in 1986, is one of the most famous landmarks of the city.

THE CATHEDRAL

Better known as Sé de Évora, it’s the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal. Its construction began in 1186, in granite and marks the transition from the Romanesque style to the Gothic style.
The Cathedral of Evora is unique of its era, as most Romanesque-styled buildings have a clear line of symmetry running the length of the building. The Sé is markedly different by having two asymmetric towers: one tower finishing with a blue tiled coned spire, while the other is a fortified clock and bell tower.

THE CHURCH OF ST. FRANCIS

After, you cane a glimpse at the 12th century Convent of St. Francis in Évora, the first house of the Franciscan Order in Portugal. The Church of the convent was remodeled at the end of the 15th century becoming an example of Gothic-Manueline architecture.

BONES CHAPEL

This chapel was built in the 17th century by three Franciscan friars in order to send the message of the transience and fragility of human life. At the entrance, the warning: “We bones here laid, for yours we wait” ("NÓS OSSOS QUE AQUI ESTAMOS PELO VOSSO ESPERAMOS"). The walls and the eight pillars of the church are covered with about 5,000 human skulls and countless bones of the friars and... from the city’s cemeteries.

The ceiling decoration, dating from 1810, full of symbols, allegories and quotations from Sacred Scripture, adds to the affirmation of another Life in the splendor of God's glory.

LUNCH TIME

Next stop for a traditional "alentejano" lunch!
After such an intensive cultural morning it will be time to enjoy the pleasures of one of the most creative cuisines of Portugal in some of the local restaurants that our guide will help you to choose.

And after a relaxing lunch the tour will continue to the "home" of the world famous "Cartuxa" and "Pera Manca" Wines, where after a guided visit into their old cellars, we’ll relax and have a wine tasting before getting back to Lisbon.

THE WINERYS

When someone says to have eaten a good meal in Portugal, this statement certainly includes a drink. The Port wine, so appreciated in England, is not the only traditional wine of Portugal. The Douro region has become famous worldwide because of its certified DOC wines, but wines of Alentejo and Dão are loved by many people as much.

Alentejo considered one of the Best Wine Regions in Portugal. We continue with our visit to Cartuxa Winery (Adega da Cartuxa) – Eugénio de Almeida Foundation, installed in the old reflector of the Jesuits’ rest home.

THE CARTUXA WINERY

The Cartuxa Winery is famous for producing excellent wines and the mythical Pêra Manca wine, one of the most emblematic Portuguese wines.
During our visit we will make a sensorial journey through the world of Alentejo wine, his history, castes and flavors. You’ll learn more about the daily life of a winery and at the end after the visit, follows a Wine tasting and Olive Oil Wine tasting, selected by the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation, aims is to challenge the 4 senses. touch it, observe it, breathe it and feel it flavor...

RETURN

At the end of the tour, discover the other bridge over Tagus River, the Bridge the 25th April.
So, we’ll give you the opportunity of crossing both bridges in one day.
You will be taken back to your hotel or apartmens in Lisbon (around 06h00 p.m.).
